This is an Amazing story about an amazing young man. 23 year old Kevin Olusola, a pre-med student who graduated from yale. He plays the Cello and BEAT BOXES! I love the fact that he is making music that infuses Hip Hop and Classical. I think this will really stifle alot of peoples negative opinions towards hip hop, and challenge those who question its versatility and legitimacy as a truly artistic form of music that can be cross cultural. Hearing this young man play is absolutely INCREDIBLE, and I hope that he encourages many young kids by what he's been able to accomplish thus far. Please watch!

One of my favorite videos of ALL TIME!!!!! I never really got the story line. But I just love the randomness of the whole concept. I mean think about it. When was the last time you saw a middle aged dude in a business suit pull up to the corner carrying a Ghettoblaster, put down cardboard and proceed to break! I mean, given you don't live in LA or New York City. In that case nothing would surprise me! At any rate, this song was pretty much my first real taste of this genre of music, and it pretty much opened my eyes and my heart to the whole Drum and Bass/Techno/Electro realm. It showed me that this type of music was also very much hip hop in nature, and that Hip Hop culture could be properly showcased outside of just the traditional boom bap beat. I actually copped this whole album just for this one joint. Thanks to the Dirty Vegas crew for puttin the boy on to something new. This song and video changed my life!

Wow! I must say that I really was taken by surprise when I stumbled across this video. Not because of the content of the song, but because of the the artist behind the content. I was recently introduced to Lil B's music through a TV show. His self proclaimed genre of "Based Music", a genre in which he is said to be the only artist making it, is becoming somewhat of a phenomenon. Lil B in most of his songs sounds completely void of any type of intellect, grammar skills, and substance at all. Every 5th word out of his mouth is "Swagged" and in most if not all of his songs, there is always some type of tacky sexual reference of him sleeping with someones chick as he bobbs back and forth in a completely retarded gold toothed stupor!. To make a long story short, Dudes music "If I can even call it that" was absolute trash! It was so ridiculous to me that I immediately began spreading it to others. As I discovered more of his music It seemed every song got dumber and dumber, and I began to put more people on to his videos. It was just so ridiculous to me, and I wanted everyone around me to see as well how ridiculous it was. This in my opinion was as bad as it got! A perfect example of the lack of substance and talent that rap has to offer right now. And even worse, judging from his enormous following, this is what the people wanted. As I had just finished showing someone the video for "Look Like Jesus" which is probably the most disgusting thing I've ever heard in my life, I discovered a comment. The comment mentioned a song done by little B called "Age of information" saying that it was proof that Lil B was really able to spit. I decided to listen to it but really did not expect much at all as I had completely decided that this dude was a complete an utter talentless, substanceless idiot. BOY WAS I WRONG!!!!!!! Not only was he spitting substance, but his whole persona was different! He was a completely different person! It was then that I began to understand the reality of the ugly two sided coin. The truth is, how many youtube views would Lil B get if this was his only posted video. How many people would really listen to his music if this was what he was portraying. How many people would I have passed this video on to, as opposed to the completely ridiculous trash videos that I shared with almost anyone willing to listen. The sad fact is. No one would care about Lil B's music if this was all he did. He'd just be another dude rapping on youtube. And me for all my talk about whats so wrong with music, and why its so wack, well.......I'm just as much a part of the problem as everyone else! This just goes to show that we shouldn't be so quick to judge people, Things are not always as they appear. I can admit when I am wrong and In this case I was sooooo wrong. The biggest tragedy in al this to me however is that a very bright and intelligent young man with so much to offer and so much to say, had to begin to act like an idiot to get the world to pay attention. What does that say about you and me, and what does that say to our young people. We should be ashamed of ourselves....................

Last Day/Next Day

As an avid LB fanatic Its safe to say that I had probably heard Phonte's "Last Day" at least a few times. Its a joint where phonte describes his last day at work as a Belks department store manager, and the frustration that basically pushed him to just quit and walk out.....For Good! To me it always was an extremely funny song to listen to. Today however it took on a new meaning to me. I've been going through some major challenges at my job lately, and anyone who works in the non-profit sector can probably relate. Its a labor of love and its extremely stressful and exhausting. I wont go into detail but just know its been very challenging. I'm 30 years old, and I'm at a very pivotal point in my life. I love what I do, but I love making music and thats what I want to be doing with my life. And quite frankly, I'm tired of just "wishing" I was doing it. So you can Imagine how I felt after listening to "Last Days" on youtube about 10 times straight. Then I discovered there was a sequal to the song entitled "Next Day". In this song Phonte answers the pivotal question; what happened after he walked out. To sum it all up, he basically explained the painful journey of taking a leap of faith and pursuing his music full time. He describes being dead broke, even while touring. He describes a crumbling home life, which ends with him coming home from tour only to discover his girl has left him. He also speaks on the ills of the industry and the havoc it wreaked on his personal and private relationships. It was a very sobering and eye opening story, one that probably would make alot of people want to rethink wether or not they are built for the business. The good news is that we all know how the story ends. In the last line of "Next Day" he ends by saying "Thats what I did with my next day, What you gon do with yours?"......................................
I thought long and hard about it, and you know what......I think I just figured it out.

As some of you may know my oldest brother Michael Dailey is a professional Opera singer currently with Opera San Jose. He practically raised my younger brother and I after my parents split, and he actually was the first person to really introduce me to Hip Hop! (Go Figure) He was way more of an eclectic soul than I was back then, and he stayed pumping music. It was standard to hear him bumping Prince, Morris Day, Mozart, Aaron Neville and Sir Mixalot all in the same day. To this day I still know every word to "Buttermilk Biscuits" By heart! And even though I hated him for it then I must admit he was the one who I really credit with molding me as an artist and fan of music. I will always be grateful to him for exposing me to all of that music. But I digress, He toured with Porgy And Bess during the time that they made this Documentary. He is the guy in the yellow vest at 1:50 in the clip. I still havent had a chance to see the film but I plan to as soon as I can get a hand on a copy. My brother is the epitome of an artist and musician who has paid dues for the longest. He has toured Europe as well as performed coast to coast in the states. He is getting to the point now where big things are happening for him, and I'm very proud of him. Please check this film out, and if you are ever in the San Jose please go and see him. He is truly amazing, and I am proud to call him my big brother.

OK, So I've definately been slippin on my pimpin when it comes to posting content on the blog. And I know Christmas is so over. However I want to share some pics with you from my Christmas in Virginia. This was an extra special Christmas for me for many reasons. The biggest reason however being that it was the first one in a really long time that both of my brothers and I were together to enjoy it. My younger brother Walter is a navy man, and my older brother Michael is an opera singer who travels the world (Yes...We Do Our Thizzle!!!!!) Anyway, that being said it was a very huge deal that we all were able to make it home to spend the holiday with our mom and stepfather. Topping it all off, we got snowed in!!!!!! In Hampton Roads Son!!!!!!
an area that rarely receives inches let alone feet of snow was hit by a blizzard. So we basically were forced to stay inside the entire time and enjoy each others company. It truly was the best Christmas of my life. I am truly grateful to GOD for allowing us to have had such an amazing holiday and I hope he blesses us with many more to come.....My Christmas break in pictures...Enjoy!

I spent Thanksgiving out in Connecticut with my In Laws this year. Its always a great time with them, rarely ever a dull moment! Not only are they just fun to be around, but the basement of the crib is basically converted into a venue equipped with a bar, foosball table, as well as a full sound system and turntables! My wifes uncle is also a DJ (Shouts out to my man DJ-Czar!) who blesses the ones and two's at all family gathering's of which I'm usually requested to perform! I remember as a college student turning the T.V one night and catching the tail end of the BLAZE battle in 2000. I remember YOUNG ZEE, of the OUTSIDAZ crew smashin a couple cats and being mad because he got jipped out of a battle by the crowd and how upset that made me. I remember how wack alot of the emcees were and me wondering why I wasnt on the stage! But most of all, I remember seeing a skinny nerdy looking skater white kid and wondering what in the world he was doing in the battle! And then he started spittin, and I remember the sheer state of AMAZEMENT that came over me. I had never heard anything like that coming from anyone, let alone a skinny little white kid. That was the night I was introduced to Eyedea. I followed his career over time and was always so amazed at how progressive and simply talented this kid was. It truly was a blow to find that he had passed so suddenly at the ripe age of 28. It really hit me hard. I began to pray for his family and friends, unable to imagine what they must be going through. It always brings home the reality of how fragile life really is. Please don't allow yourself to take anything for granted, and know that at some point we will all face GOD on his terms and not our own, because we are not promised time.......It was and will be my distinct pleasure to have experienced such a talent as he was. And I hope and pray he rests peacefully. We will miss you brother.

First off I must start by saying this. If you haven't been to Five Guys, Im just gonna tell you right now......GO!!!!!........IMMEDIATELY!!!!
So with that being said, If you have been there you know all to well about their ingenius idea of allowing patrons to flex their creative muscles by using crayons and notecards to express their thoughts, loves, likes and dislikes about their food and post them to the peg board. My friends and I usually make this into a contest to see who can come up with the most creative notecard while we wait for our food, and of course I ALWAYS win. This is actually one of my favorite things about Five Guys. Once after church we went and I drew a picture of Jesus bangin a burger out........ So classic! I'm always finding something new and creative to jazz up my notecard masterpieces. Today however I opted to go a different route. Yes, even at Five Guys the grind doesn't stop.
Burger eaters like hip hop right? Well, if they do at least they will know where to find it!

Whattup yall, During my time here in the "Queen City" Charlotte NC, I have had the chance to experience alot of really cool events. This however was one of my favorites. Arts Beats and Lyrics is basically an art exhibition with a Hip Hop twist to it. The art is amazing and there is also FREE yes I said it, FREE Drinks, as the event is sponsored by Jack Daniels. Guru of Gangstar's surprising death, and events like it help me remember how short life really is. I am in no way wealthy, however my wife and I have been blessed with good jobs and are able to do okay. We decided long ago that life is just too short to spend it worrying and living for tommorow because tommorow is not promised to us. Well, I turned 30 today.....

And suprisingly enough I must say that I feel great. You know how people jest and start making the old man jokes right after you hit 25 so I've been preparing myself to say the least. Alot has happened in my 30 years on this earth, but it's more so what hasn't happened as of yet that I've been focusing on this morning.
For many of you who may not know this I have been making music since I was in the 5th grade. That equates to somewhere around 15 or 16 years. I actually began getting pretty serious with it at about 9th grade. However when I look back on it and think about what I have really accomplished in that time as an artist I must be honest and say not much. I mean from an "Official" standpoint at least. I say so because aside from a handful of features on other well known artists projects I have no discography at all. I only have released one mixtape, and I have never ever released a solo project to date (Even though I will be doing so very soon

ie "Nemesis, The Past Due Project"-----SHAMELESS PROMOTION ;-)

But anyway, I've never even released a solo project. You would think that someone who has been doing this since 5th grade would t least have a little more to show for all the years, tears and sweat put into it as myself.
I recently was reading up on the background of a very popular rapper named "Asher Roth". In the write up he was talking about how he got his start in the business. But he basically said he started writing rhymes somewhere like around 2002 and pretty much got on after he sent an email on myspace. I must say, I was a little upset by that. Not that I don't like Asher because dude is amazing, but simply because I couldn't understand why it was so simple for artist nowadays to get on. I began to feel like a failure. I began thinking to myself maybe this isn't for me. Then I began thinking
of all the youtube overnight sensations, all the Soulja boy's, all of the lame dope boy stanky leg ring tone rappers who seemingly skip the whole process of paying dues and even more so don't even have to hone their talent because they dont have any to begin with anyway! And I thought about what they have to show for their entire 2 year career in the music business versus what I have to show for a lifetime of devotion to Hip Hop........
Then I realized what I have to show............GROWTH!
I honestly can't say what I would have become had I seen success at an earlier age. I am mature enough to admit that I was not prepared for it. In my years of emceeing I have taken many creative twists and turns. Nowadays I don't use any profanity or say the N Word in any of my music for a couple reasons:

1. As a born again Christian I don't see cursing as an acceptable thing for me to do.
2. I feel like we should encourage and inspire others to see that we don't need to do so in order to make music. As emcees we are wordsmiths, and we should be masters of vocabulary, we dont need curse words to fill in the blanks.
3. Although I say it on my own time, I do not want anyones child to feel like they can say the N word because they heard me say it, that to me is socially irresponsible.

I also realized this. As someone who has been raised on Hip Hop, and I mean Literally lived and breathed it for almost all my life, I realize that now is my turn to give back to it. The Hip Hop culture as I knew it is diminishing, and It is up to those like myself to make sure that we represent it and are able to pass it on to future generations. I would not have been in a position to do so at an earlier age. I now however stand as an emcee and artist well capable and mature enough for that challenge and the things that may come with it, and I am glad that I have not been beaten down by alot of the crap that's going on in the industry right now. I LOVE HIP HOP, and I am never going to stop reppin it.
So I say all this to say....... Look out ya'll, The industry is in need of a change, and Im eager to pitch in and do my part. Thirty is not the new 20, But the game is in need of some real Grown Men right now to take they belt off and start handing out beat-downs. In an industry dominated by teenagers I'm just warming up! And the more I think about it, the more I realize that's a pretty good spot to be in.
So when I saw the picture of the plane soaring past the sign that read "Speed Limit 30 mph" It made me think of where I am right now, and where I'm headed, It says it all!

I recently heard something that left me really disheartened. One of my favorite emcees, and point blank one of the best to ever do it Kam Moye aka"Supastition" has announced that he is no longer going to be making music. His reasons are simple; He is putting in way too much effort and getting way to little in return.
This came as such a shock to me and I'm sure others as well. I always was under the impression that someone as revered, respected and talented as Supa had to be doing pretty well. I mean, he tours, he's got a crazy catalog of material, and I mean... He's got a deal right!
But I guess I was wrong. Supa talked about how the same cats who talked about how big fans they were turned around and straight bootlegged his projects. And how he had all this respect in the hip hop community but not enough dough to make rent, Sobering to say the least.
I got so infuriated, I said to myself how could they do this to Supa. How could THEY force him into this position,and then I realized something........
THEY was ME!!!!
I realized that I actually had never purchased one of his CD's. The only one I did have was one that I downloaded (Illegaly) for free from a Blog. It did not seem like a big deal at the time of course but looking back on it now helped me to see clearly how this does effect artists just like Supastition. I always just saw this as an issue that was exaggerated by huge corporations and money hungry artists who were already filthy rich, but I was wrong.
I say all of this to say I'm sorry Supa. I'm sorry as a fan, and I am sorry as a fellow artist to have to see someone with your talent level put in this position.
We all hope that this is not the way it ends, but if it is.......

So Im at work today sitting at my desk trying to do like 3 things at one time when my brother calls me screaming. He's Like, YO... Turn your radio on NOW! So I tell him I cant because I dont have a radio in my office, not to mention the fact that we are in completely different cities! But anyway, I ask him what it is he's listening to thats got him geekin so hard. He's Like "Yo, you gotta hear this song by this dude Jay Electronica" He didnt even know the name of the joint, but he was reciting line after line! So I googled the dudes name and the song lines he quoted and found the song. I must say.....This is one of the most amazing things I've heard in a while. This dude takes me back to like 95 hip hop, but at the same time is amazingly ahead of the curve lyrically. I listened to this song for like 9 hours straight on and off. I'm actually listening to it right now! This cat is amazing!!!!!!! and the beat, flawless.....Nuff Said!

As I was sitting at the coffe shop today (Thanks to the traffic jam on I-77) working from my laptop, I decided to attempt multi tasking and catching up on some things music-wise. If you're any thing like me however, that probably doesnt work out very well. So soon enough, between Bignoise radio and twitter I was completely sidetracked. I think my neck really did start to hurt a little from the constant headnodding I was doing as I listened to Boot Camps "Yesterday" and Black Milks "About Me" streaming from the Bignoise Radio website (Shameless Promotion). I also was keeping a close eye on my Blackberry making sure to catch all the latest tweets from some of the cats I follow, One of whom happens to be one of my favorite artists. Thanks to twitter more and more people who were completely untouchable are now closer than ever. Thats really exciting to someone like myself or anyone whose been making music for a while, as it cuts out the whole have my people call your people type ish. But anyway, So I tweeted this individual the day before respectfully inquiring about the possibility of collabing to see if they were at all interested. I respectfully ended the tweet by downplaying my complete and utter anxiety and stating that if they werent interested It was not a problem and I would not at all be offended. I recieved no response. I definately was dissapointed and felt really shut down, however I shook of my sensitivity and gave the benefit of the doubt. "Maybe they just didnt see it" I told myself, No big deal. So Today, as I sat at the coffee shop I decide to try again. I sent pretty much the same message, just a little different. But once again..... No response.
So I just charge it to the game, shake it off and keep moving. The whole time telling myself "Its all good... Im not upset". But the truth of the matter is.... I was upset. It did really upset me. I began to think about all of the times I've gotten the Heisman from artists who were what we consider "Established" . When I really think about it, I've pretty much gotten the Ill-Hardbody snub from like 98 percent of the "Established" artists I've reached out to. Granted... I am not dillusional in thinking that these people are not busy, honestly... Im sure that they probably get a hundred inquiries a day just like the one I wrote! I do however know one thing..... Im very good at what I do.... And it made me a little bitter to be honest. I really had to struggle to shake that off. I know better than that however, and I came to my senses! Nobody in this business owes me anything. And they got where they are by hard work and dedication, not because someone gave them a handout.. So I refuse to expect that from anyone point blank period. I will say this though........ I hope that when my break finally comes that I dont forget what it was like for me when I was on the outside of things looking in.

Growing up I had the priveledge of being surrounded by dope emcees. For me it was such a great experience because I never needed to look farther than my immediate circle to find music to be inspired by. This cut is a track from my cousin, and hip hop mentor "D-Blest". This track is one of 7 cuts from an unreleased EP he completed with a San Diego based producer named DJ Niques. Yo, This is a little video taken durning the show at my Mother and Father In Laws basement on Christmas night. My Inlaws LOVE Hip Hop, and have been asking me to give a private show for the family for years. I always declined, because for those of you who might not know sometimes your family can tend to treat your passions as somewhat of a cute hobby or spectacle, which I absolutely hate. But this year I finally said I would do it, and I'm really glad I did. My uncle is a DJ who also was a pretty well known rapper in Connecticut, so the basement is already eqquiped with an official sound system as well as one's and two's. So with my uncle spinning in the back ground I threw a private show for my family, and you know what. It was actually one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever done. My family was so into it, and they actually were gettin Super Crunk, even my grandma!!!!!!!!!!! It was an amazing experience. Heres a little video snippet taken on my sisters cell phone.

You know what. I came to a realization today. I always thought, or rather should say I have pretty much lied to myself and convinced myself that the majority of computer issues I have experienced were limited to PC's. I was always the guy who told people that Mac was the only way to go, and that they are completely stable, easy to use, and never have issues that PC's do. But you know what, Today really did it for me! I had somewhat of an epiphany. Thats a freaking lie!!!! A huge lie!!!!!! You know how they have thos Hi my name is whatever, and I'm a mac and Im compatible with everything commercials. Well its actually the other way around. I can plug ANYTHING!!!! into a PC and it will recognize it. My macs will hardly ever accept anything unless its in a Mac format, or made by apple. Also trying to do anything on a MAc creative wise is almost imposible without spending hour upon hour converting files into an "acceptable" format. Lets not even talking about music and filesharing. Apple spends so much time trying to prevent Piracy its almost as if you dont even have control over your own music. They want to control what you play your music on and who you share it with..... Man... get of my Dillz! I'll do what I want with MY Music that I paid for!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lets not even get into using advanced apps like Pro Tools! Their customer support for products like Digidesign and M-
Audio Suck!!!!! and all they dois try and force you to upgrade by discontinuing support of older products so that nothing is compatible. I shouldnt have to buy a new hardware interface every couple of years just so that my interface works with your freakin OS!!!!!! You know what Macs really are. Overpriced, Arrogant PC's. Sure they are a little more stable, but nowhere near what they are hypedup to be! It just sadly is a better option because PCs are so completely trash money!!!!! Why should I have to jump through 1000 hoops just to convert a file before I can make a simple freaking video b/c neither mac or pc accepts the file type. why cant I have a computer that does the work for me! Is that too much to expect from a freaking $1000 machine that should be smarter than me, I dont think so! All I want is a computer that will do what It is supposed to do, and will not require me to have to go find a freaking program online to do the task that in my mind my own computer and software should be able to do, bc at this point Im so frustrated I feel like Im bout to go back to school to learn how to build my own! ITS THAT SERIOUS!!!!!!!!

Yo!!!! its like one in the morning and I should be sleeping, but I'm not.....So for some of you who may not know this, I DJ as well as rap. However since I relocated to NC I've pretty much completely put the ones and two's up on the shelf. Not really because I wanted to but more because I just havent been on it like that. Yess!!!! I have been slippin! But anyway... As of late I also have just been finding it really hard to get my motivation up for writing and just grinding on my music. I've just honestly been allowing life to take my passion away. But a really magical thing happened last night! For some reason I just went into my studio and got on the tables, I started spinning and scratchin up old 12's and It just took me back to that place! I felt like I was in high school again. I felt like I did when I used to go from open mic to open mic just looking for a place to express myself. I remembered cyphering up on the boardwalk... causing massive crowds until the cops would come break it up. I remembered driving around the city all night with nowhere to go....Freestyling and listening to underground hip hop joints.... Basically, I began to remember what It was like just living for Hip Hop! It was amazing!!! I really needed that. I'm definately gonna get back on my grizzly............ My mixtapes like 2 months overdue. But Trust me I'm focused and my mind is definately right, its gonna be worth the wait!

Fittingly so,

I've decided that the Title for my album is going to be "What it is". Not so much even because I think that it sounds good (even though I think it does). But moreso because I just think that it truly captures the essence of the project. I think the title also simply answers many questions others have asked, as well as I have asked myself; Questions pertaining to me, my album, my content and style of music etc.......... As opposed to having to answer anyones questions or even trying to figure out the answers out for myself I'm simply offering this project and it basically Is What it is..... Hence the name "What it Is".... I'm just eagerly awaiting the completion of this project, as well as the release of the "Official Bootleg" in preparation for the upcoming album..... Im really excited to finally see this music thing start paying some dividends............
